Joshua Redman, Brooklyn Rider & Patrick Zimmerli – Sun on Sand (2019)
So I dived in some Joshua Redman recently and damn he can blow his sax (uhm). But I discovered the Brooklyn Rider string quartet and that is a great combination. All this is arranged and composed by Patrick Zimmerli, who I discovered also. We have a fusion of modal jazz with contemporary music, fast paced polyphony, very groovy at times. Great album.
Joshua Redman and The Bad Plus (2015)
As I said. I had me some Redman. In combination with the Bad Plus, we have something much more accessible, all in the feel. This is my kind of smooth. This is not brain fucking jazz, this jazz goes your way and it is good to not be in the driver seat for once. You can trust the driver.
The letdown – William Ryan Fritch (2020)
This is a fresh ambient release of this month. Latest of WRF, it features his signature faraway, echoey sound. Starting off a bit jazzy, it drifts little by little into melancholy and darkness, but without loosing its warmth. This is one smooth trip if you are in the mood.
Athletic Progression – Athletic Progression (2020)
Smoth downbeat modern jazz with some nice electro flourishes.

Jerzy Milian – Orkiestra Rozrywkowa PRiTV W Katowicach (Nagrania 1975)
Fantastic jazz/funk orchestral piece from the Polish vibraphonist, containing floots, drum breaks, catchy backing vocals. A samplers dream.
Black Loops – Seven Hills Archives (2020)
House / Beats that are perfect for someone like me who is just getting into the genre while appreciating the jazz elements to it. Thanks to JQBX user and new friend Fairo for playing a song from it in his sessions set.
Awkward Corners – Dislocation Songs (2020)
Meditative ambient music from UK based artist. Sorathy Korwar features on tabla on selective tracks.
Preservation – Eastern medicine , Western illness (2020)
Legendary DJ and producer Preservation, known for producing for some the greats such as RZA And KRS-1. Came out with this album, which has much of the material sampled from Hong Kong vinyl. So if you like gritty atmospheric sampled beats with great outros and raps check out this album. Just check out that line up of features , top underground dogs such as Mach-hommy, quelle chris, ka, and Roc Marciano.

Heerlens Percussie Ensemble – Biologic Music (2020)
I am shamelessly using this even though Richard found it but I for sure thought it was the best thing I have heard all month. The percussion layering is what won me over. Very fresh sound.
Chris Joss – Hyperacusis (2020)
Also want to give a shout out to Chris Joss’ new album Hyperacusis. Hyperacusis btw is a hear yet highly dibilating hearing disorder where an individual experiances increased sensitivity to specific frequencies and volume ranges of sound. In severe cases this causes difficulty for a person to tolerate every day sounds. (can you imagine?) Chris’s Joss has both this and tinitus and still produces amazing music
Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist (2020)
Freddie Gibbs gives us another quality release this time with beatmaker Alchemist backing him up on this project. Giving us a fresh new sound Freddie Gibbs still surprises me with the amount of quality he is able to put out after releasing monster albums with Madlib. This project is for sure one of my favorites from this year.
The Sonics – Here Are the Sonics (1965)
The Sonics first album is an underrated classic with it having a fun Garage Rock/Proto-Punk sound that fits the summer sound I’ve been dying for recently. Though they are one of the many other bands from the 60s Garage Rock boom they somehow stand out and do it better than most could have in there time period.
The Doors – The Doors (1967)
The Doors are good for the summer.
Syrinx – Tumblers From The Vault (2016)
Sryinx was an early Canadian electronic music group / collective. They were active from 1970-1972, this album contains their entire discography. The band is comprised of three people, a multi-instrumentalist, a percussionist, and a saxaphonist. Together, they managed to create an absolutely incredible sound. The music, in my opinion can only be described as beautiful/haunting, as is most music when the moog synthesizer is included. Wiki page mentions they opened for Miles Davis as well which is something that is always worth mentioning.
The album its self is a compilation. Their sound can be pretty heavy so it isn’t the easiest album to run through front to back but that does not discount the beauty each song has to offer.
Sarah Webster Fabio – Juju/Alchemy of the Blues: Poems by Sarah Webster Fabio (1976)
This is not just an album discovery, but actually a complete artist discovery, check out their other albums as well. I only knew the song ‘Sweet Songs’ before from an compilation album. The cover art of this album states ‘Poems with musical background’. However, this is not just background, this is real funky stuff.
Ronald Langestraat – Searching (1984)
Another 80s jazz album from the Netherlands (next to Heerlens Percussie Ensemble mentioned above). This album is self-recorded by the artist on a 4 track in his living room. He plays acoustic piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Farfisa organ, saxophone, as well as clarinet, organ bass, Micro Moog, and drums among others. Influences from all over the world with with lo-fi pop vocals. The artists describes it as “space jazz.”
Yorkston/Thorne/Khan – Navarasa: Nine Emotions (2020)
This Indian-Scottish collaboration does some calming things with jazz-fusion-folk in their latest album, Navarasa: Nine Emotions. Navarasa comes from Indian dramaturgy and art that that outlines the nine spectrums of emotion, and the Indian musical expression of the navarasa is transferred to Scottish poetry and verse to produce a listening experience that spans many emotional landscapes.
Minyo Crusaders – Echoes of Japan (エコーズ・オブ・ジャパン) (2019)
Ever wondered what it would sound like if traditional japanese Min’yōs where reinterpreted in latin, african and carribean styles? Bet you didn’t until now. Let me quench this thirst you didn’t know you had with this album!
Immortal Onion – XD Experience Design 2020
If you like jazz by the likes of GoGo Penguin, Esbjörn Svensson Trio or Hiromi, you will definitely enjoy this young polish trio. The use of electronic music elements organically melts into their style culminating in the last track ‘IA (Information Architecture)’ with heavy use of electronic elements.
The Sorcerers – In search of the Lost City of the Monkey God (2020)
I love these vibes that make you feel like you’re in a groovy halloween party.
